COMMUNITY GRANTS PROGRAM
The ROTARY CLUB OF STEAMBOAT SPRINGS ENDOWMENT was created in 1996 in memory of founding member Jack Black who died suddenly at an early age. The purpose of the endowment is to build a permanent financial resource for our grants program. The endowment is maintained by the Yampa Valley Community Foundation. Earnings from principal are used each year to fund community grants. Our goal is to build the endowment to $300,000. The endowment is part of the Jack Black Fellowship program.
Each Steamboat Springs Rotarian is encouraged to contribute at least $25 per quarter with the goal of becoming a JACK BLACK FELLOW (upon contributing a total $1,000).
Each year the club distributes about $10,000 to non-profit organizations, clubs and individuals through the COMMUNITY GRANTS PROGRAM. These funds are available through earnings on the club’s endowment, together with other dollars gained through Rotary fund-raising projects. A Grants Committee reviews applications and is authorized to award up to $1,000 to a deserving applicant without Board approval. Grants in excess of that amount are presented to the full board for discussion if recommended by the Grants Committee.
Areas of Focus for the Rotary Grants program are the following:
- Funded activity should improve the quality of life in Steamboat Springs and Routt County
- Primarily serve but not limited to seniors and youth
- Not to be used for re-granting by recipient
- Grants will not be granted retroactively after the timing of the funding need
- Grant funds will not be used for operational purposes but for specific activities
- Grant determination will favor those activities that impact larger numbers of citizens
- Generally grants will be made for distinctive, one time activities and should not be anticipated for multiple years for the same activity
- Organizations may not apply for funds for the same project for consecutive years
- Grants over $1000 must be presented to the full Rotary Board at their monthly meeting for approval
- Grants up to $1000 can be approved by the grant committee alone
Senior Grants:
- An RFP will be sent out to all agencies in the county serving seniors
- The application process will be similar to that listed above for other grants with the total focus of these funds to be on the benefit to seniors.
- A Rotary member signature is not required for these grants
- These grants will be determined annually after July 1 of each year
